Project Background

Due to the endless conflicts in Iraq, 90% of girls grew up with trauma in form of physical injuries from the war, gender-based violence, or lack of stability. In addition, women and girls in Iraq have traditionally been restricted in their movement and social lives due to patriarchal social norms. COVID-19 has led to a tightening of these restrictions and risks undoing the hard-won gains in rights that women have won over the years. Empowering women and girls through outdoor sports is a unique way that allows women to reclaim public space while building their confidence and life skills, fostering positive change across the country.

Target Group

The project works exclusively with women and girls between the ages of 15 – 25. However, men are also indirectly affected through the interventions.

Project Goals

Our project aims to create safe spaces for women and girls to participate in sports. 140 women and girls are supported to develop the necessary leadership skills to participate in public life. Project activities include:

  1. Life Skills through Sports (LSS): the LSS curriculum was developed in collaboration with education experts and focuses on developing skills and competencies in three areas: Communication, Conflict Mediation and Leadership. Regular interaction between participant:s from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, as well as the implementation of community projects and events by participants, support the internalization of these skills.
  2. LSS 5k Race: Our partner organization Free to Run hosts a 5k race for our LSS team members at the conclusion of their LSS sessions. Participants from diverse backgrounds come together to participate in the race and share their activities and the benefits of sports and life skills with the general public.
  3. Erbil Marathon: after the LSS 5k run, the participant:s who are motivated will participate in the planned Erbil Marathon in October.
