Protection and Education for Children and Women
The project in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, offers shelter, physical and psychological support to women and children who have to flee gender-based violence and promotes them through specific educational programmes.
Project Background
In Ethiopia, sexual harassment and gender-based violence are widespread, especially within marriage. Apart from comprehensive legal protection, there is often a lack of criminal prosecution. Furthermore, existing social structures, shame, ignorance and fear of retribution often prevent the women concerned from seeking legal assistance. In addition, girls in Ethiopia attend school on average only half as long as boys. As a result, they have less chance of finding a job and earning their own money later on, which is why they often spend their entire lives in dependence.
In the Mother and Child Rehabilitation Centre (MCRC), the women, children and young people are accompanied on their way to an independent and self-determined life. The project work focuses on the physical and mental health of those affected.
Target Group
The target group includes women, mothers, children and young people living in extreme poverty and who are exposed to gender-based violence. The project supports 28 mothers and 174 children. In addition to the direct beneficiaries in the centre, other women in the region benefit because the project defines the role of women in society and strengthens their participation in society.
Project Goals
The aim of the project is to strengthen the self-confidence of the women so that they themselves can stand up for their rights in the future. The children and young people shall be able to grow up protected and shall be supported and encouraged through education.
The centre offers specific training and further education programmes for the mothers while the children attend school. In addition to food, medical care and accommodation, the women and children also receive psychosocial support in the project. In this way, the women are given the opportunity to process what they have experienced in individual and group therapies and to regain their faith in themselves.
The mothers are also provided with day places in the centre’s own kindergarten, so that they have the opportunity to pursue an education or work during the day. The support in the kindergarten is still available to the children even after their mothers have left the centre.
THE PROMOTION OF THIS PROJECT IS COMPLETED
However, we still support many other projects in the region.
