Project Background

The project is located in Vrygrond/Capricorn, a socially disadvantaged suburb of Cape Town.

Large parts of the population of South Africa remain excluded from the country’s economic progress. This is also true for the people in Vyrgrond/Capricorn’s poor neighbourhoods, so-called townships, near Cape Town. Poverty, hopelessness and lack of prospects characterise everyday life here. Unemployment is omnipresent, although on the other hand there is a lack of well-trained workers in the country.  However, most of the inhabitants are people without a school-leaving certificate or even a completed education and therefore have no chance on the formal labour market. This leads to high crime and violence rates. Drug abuse, alcohol and prostitution are widespread. There is a lack of hygiene and medical care and thousands are infected with diseases such as HIV. For the approximately 2,500 children in the township, the only way out of poverty is education. But so far only a few have access to good schools.

Target Group

The iThemba-Primary-School was built exactly for these children. And currently offers a school place for 210 children. In the next few months the school will be expanded to accommodate more than 700 children in the future.

Project Goals

The iThemba Primary School was opened to provide children with a long-term, sustainable and high-quality education. Also the parents are included in the educational concept and sensitized for the importance of education. The construction of the school is progressing in stages and should be able to be attended by over 700 children in the future. The construction of the first block with seven classrooms and sanitary facilities has already been completed. For the time being, two classrooms will serve as teachers’ rooms and storage facilities for necessary materials. In the long term, the primary school is to become an educational facility where children can learn during the day and young people and adults can attend various educational opportunities in the evening, such as literacy courses or vocational training courses.
