Future Academy, Cape Town

Cape Town - South Africa

The step from school to further education is often a big one for young adults. Through a comprehensive tutoring programme in mathematics, science and English for students in the eleventh and twelfth grades in South Africa, we support them in recognizing their potential and developing their prospects. Our project creates a safe and encouraging learning environment for students from underprivileged backgrounds and equips them with the skills they need to continue their education.

Project Background

Many pupils in Cape Town do not have access to tutoring and special support. This means that they are unable to keep up with pupils of the same age who can afford this support in relation to their school-leaving certificate, particularly in the final grades. Poorer final grades and the resulting non-admission to higher education institutions such as universities are the result.

Target group

Students in the eleventh and twelfth grades.

As a coach and mentor, it is a matter close to my heart to help people take responsibility for themselves. It is important to me that disadvantaged children and young people in particular are given the chance to receive a good education so that they can shape their own lives. Because education creates opportunities and independence. I have been the project manager of the Future Academy in Cape Town since 2024.

Project Target

The main aim of our project is to provide students in years 11 and 12 with additional targeted lessons in mathematics, science, English and biology. The aim is to improve their skills and knowledge. The project is aimed specifically at students from disadvantaged backgrounds and offers them a safe and supportive learning environment. Qualified teachers are employed to support the learning process and lessons take place on Saturdays from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm.

To support learning, a comprehensive workbook is produced for each subject, containing summaries, worksheets and exercises. Feedback from students has shown that the workbook is very useful and enables them to better understand the tasks by practicing.

In line with the principles of social entrepreneurship, parents who can afford to pay a fee can apply for their children to participate in the program. For every two fee-paying students, one student is admitted free of charge. School principals select students who show potential and commitment and recommend them for the program.

At the end of the project, the students will have significantly improved their skills in math, science, English and biology, which translates into better grades in their school exams.

In addition, they receive support for admission to higher education institutions and learn more about possible fields of study in career guidance workshops.
