Project Background

The former township of Katutura (loosely translated as “the place where we don’t want to live”), is located on the outskirts of the Namibian capital Windhoek. Around 1960, the capital’s dark-skinned population was systematically forcibly resettled here. Since then, the township has grown into a suburb of about five square kilometers with a population of about 50,000. Although government funds are being invested in infrastructure and educational facilities in Katutura, the situation remains difficult for many families. There is a lack of income, food and access to education. Children and young people often drop out of their education prematurely in order to support their families and work themselves.

Target Group

The primary target group is children and young people from socially disadvantaged families in the former township.

It takes a village…to build an airline, or so it goes. Since the early days of Discover, we are convinced, that it takes a whole crew to turn a dream into reality.

With that in mind, it is no surprise that the suggestion for this wonderful project came from our cabin colleague Orhan, who knew about Monica’s work in Namibia. Monica’s Home of Good Hope is undoubtedly a much needed safe space for children in Katutura, one of the poorest districts in the region.
At the facility, around 600 kids are served a hot meal daily, but there are many more hungry mouths to feed. However, in order to grant more children access to food and a safe place to learn and play, a bigger, second building is needed. While we, as project coordinators, will do our best to turn this vision into reality, we are especially happy to say that there are many amazing colleagues at Discover ready to promote the project onboard, help with in kind donations or hands-on work on site. Without them, this wouldn’t be possible.

Project Goals

This project focuses on two core problems: Malnutrition and as a result more difficult learning conditions. Many families in Katutura cannot reliably afford food, and some children have to make do with only a slice of bread throughout the day. Not only does their health suffer, but it is often much more difficult for them to concentrate in school and to learn effectively. Their already difficult starting position – even access to education is often unaffordable – suffers further, and they receive little to no support in the state education system.

That’s why Monica Imanga founded the Home Of Good Hope in 2010. The heart of the facility is a food bank, but homework supervision is also part of the project. Several hundred children come every day, but many more could be served if the facility were larger. As a first step, therefore, a second, larger building is urgently needed to provide even more space for eating, learning and playing.

In the long term, Monica would like to have some classrooms of her own so that her charges can learn safely and in peace. A playground and a facility for young mothers are also planned.
