Project Background

With almost 7,000 students, Samar National High School is the largest school in the Catbalogan Samar region in the east of the Philippines. With such a large school, it is therefore not surprising that the students come from different income groups and that the quality of learning is not always balanced. It is not uncommon for poorer families in particular to have 8-10 children. However, with an average wage of the equivalent of 250 – 300 euros, it is problematic to provide all children with sufficient learning materials. As a result, almost 3,000 students at Samar National School are unable to attend classes with their own learning materials such as pens, writing pads, etc. and are at a disadvantage compared to their classmates. But the school itself also lacks the materials to ensure good quality teaching. Another problem is that the number of school dropouts has increased. The school attributes this to the fact that some pupils have not eaten enough and are therefore unable to concentrate and ultimately fall behind so much that they end up dropping out of school.

Target Group

The primary target group are the pupils of Samar National High School and Cabugawa Primary School and young school dropouts.

In November 2013, shortly after the devastating Yolanda storm, I flew to the Philippines to help out. At that time, many said my help was too small and my help didn’t make much difference, but in reality I was where I always wanted to be, in a place where my help was really needed. Since that time I have always been involved and try to help as much as I can. That’s why this year I’m especially excited to be working with help alliance, where we’ll be helping out more than 3,000 students with their learning materials to help ease the financial burden on parents and give students an equal opportunity to learn.

Project Goals

In 2024, we are planning to set up a digital training center for children and young people at Samar National High School in a pilot project together with Samar State University and Cabugawa Primary School. The idea behind it: By providing students:in all grades with access and a solid foundation in digital literacy and other important digital skills, their chances of employment and the opportunity to engage in skills-based entrepreneurial activities that they can make a living from will increase in the long run. The training center is designed to enable them to innovate, adapt to technological change and succeed in any career they aspire to.

Especially beyond the boundaries of academic institutions, there are many young people who do not have access to digital education. For this reason, the planned training center will develop and offer special courses for marginalized groups and young school dropouts.

Sustainability is also a goal here. The school is to be equipped with solar panels in order to reduce the environmental impact as well as the electricity costs of Samar National High School. The financial resources saved in this way can be reinvested directly in educational work.
