Kinder Paradise, Prampram
In this project, founded in 1998 and supported by us since 2008, children who have lost their parents or live in an emergency situation find a new home. They receive protection, medical care, balanced meals and education.
Project Background
In Ghana, the number of children living on the streets and not attending school is constantly increasing. The country also has one of the highest unemployment rates for adolescents and young adults in Africa, and the growing number of street children further exacerbates this social problem. In the capital Accra alone, around 60,000 children currently live on the streets and without any real prospects. Due to the lack of medical care, many of the children suffer from diseases and malnutrition. In order to survive, they often start stealing or begging and girls are often forced into prostitution at a young age. They live in extreme poverty and often end up in crime. With a day centre in Accra and the children’s village including school in the coastal town of Prampram, about 45 km away, children who have lost their parents or are living in an emergency situation find help and a new home.
Target Group
Most of the 220 children who end up in the project never attended school before the project or dropped out very early. Many of the children are orphans or have been saved from abuse, slavery or other life-threatening circumstances.
Project Goals
In the Children’s Village, the children are given a caring home as well as access to school education and medical care. The Children’s Village’s own school is also attended by children from the poor surrounding villages.
At the day centre in Accra, the street children receive full meals and are taught basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills. The educational facilities are intended to provide a comprehensive primary education and thus pave the way for the children to take up vocational training or studies. In addition, the life skills training of the children is intended to promote positive changes in behaviour and facilitate (re-)integration into their families and society.
The project also promotes the rights of children and child protection measures.
