Help for more than 2000 girls and boys in Central India

At the 22nd RTL telethon hosted by Wolfram Kons, a sum of EUR 9,188,527 was raised to help children in need in Germany and around the world. This takes the total sum of donations raised since the start of RTL’s charitable activities in 1996 to more than EUR 160 million.

This is the second time that help alliance was involved in the telethon with a project of its own. Last year, EUR 240,000 was raised for the help alliance project “Open School Cologne”, which was invested, among other things, in refugee care and in a new chemistry lab. help alliance supporter Annette Frier visited the school one year after the 2016 telethon and saw the results for herself.

At the end of November, donations were raised for the help alliance project “Sponsorship Circle India”, which is headed by Lufthansa staff member Ralf Steuer. He also went with an RTL camera team to Madhya Pradesh, one of the poorest areas in the world.

The help alliance office team was in the studio during the telethon and took calls from the viewers, while Managing Director Joachim Steinbach explained to the people viewing on the screens and telethon host Kons the work that help alliance does.

About the project

More than 2,000 children of all ages, ethnic minorities and denominations now live in the 20 boarding schools funded by the Child Sponsoring Circle in Madhya Pradesh, spread over an area of 24,500 square kilometers, some of them in difficult terrain. They receive nutritious meals, clothing, medical care and schooling in the so-called “boardings” (boarding schools).

Every year, 200 children leave the boarding schools, equipped with a school diploma for a better future. After training, the girls and boys are re-integrated into their village communities and can pass on what they have learned in order to achieve lasting financial independence. The long-term goal remains establishing the start-up financing needed for an independent education and care system in Madhya Pradesh.

Meals, health care and educational opportunities in the poverty-stricken state of Madhya Pradesh give children good prospects for the future. A mobile infirmary will also provide medical care to the poorest people in the villages of the region.

The “Health Awareness” program

In addition, the Child Sponsoring Circle carries out health camps, so that residents of remote villages can also be provided with medical care. This is why local hygiene and first-aid training courses are carried out, obstetricians are trained and the extremely high mortality rate for pregnancies and births is significantly reduced.
