Strong alliance for children in need in India*

  • New home for 200 neglected girls in Dehradun, India
  • Every donated Euro arrives on site without a cent deduction

For the fifth time, help alliance, the Lufthansa Group’s charitable aid organization, is represented with one of its social projects at the annual RTL Donation Marathon “RTL – wir helfen Kindern”. On November 19 and 20, viewers are invited to donate to the construction of a shelter in Dehradun in northern India. In the new ‘Girls Shelter’ of the project “Education creates opportunities for street children“, neglected girls are to find a new home. At present, most of them live in a home in Dehradun, the capital of the state of Uttarakhands, which is far too small and in need of rehabilitation. Together with Mastercard, help alliance and “RTL – wir helfen Kindern” want to change this situation. As in the previous year, the technology company supports the strong alliance of the two non-profit organizations.

“With the construction of the ‘Girls Shelter’, 200 girls are given the chance of a safe home and thus a better and self-determined life.”

“We are very pleased to be able to participate in the RTL Donation Marathon again with one of our aid projects. With the construction of the ‘Girls Shelter’, 200 girls are given the chance of a safe home and thus a better and self-determined life. Due to social hierarchies and patriarchal social structures, they are also denied access to education. This is where our project work comes in”, says Andrea Pernkopf, managing director of help alliance.

Many of the girls are orphaned, unwanted, abused or homeless. Some are cared for by single parents or grandparents, who are, however, overburdened with the responsibility of raising them. Some families are so poor that the children cannot be cared for at home. help alliance has been supporting the project since 2015 and has so far enabled around 200 street and slum children to attend school and receive an education. But the children’s needs are not only met in school: they also receive medical care and regular and balanced meals. Because experience shows: Good education is only possible when the children are satiated and healthy.

“‘RTL – Wir helfen Kindern’ and help alliance have been a strong alliance of help for needy children all over the world for many years,” said Wolfram Kons, RTL Charity Director and presenter of the RTL Donation Marathon. “Since 2019, the technology company Mastercard has also been a supporter. Together we have already helped many children in the long term. And we will also help the girls in Dehradun to find new life perspectives. And there is one more thing I can promise: Every Euro donated will arrive on site without a cent deduction.

Peter Bakenecker, Division President for Germany and Switzerland at Mastercard, adds: “In the new facility, which will be built with the donations from the RTL Donation Marathon 2020, the girls will then be able to spend their free time and also sleep there. This will create a protected place where they will be appreciated and receive a good education”.
