Cleaning up together for a cleaner planet
Children and young people from the help alliance projects took part in the 2nd Global #CommunityCleanup
As part of WorldCleanUpDay and under the motto #TakeActionForACleanPlanet, the local help alliance communities had called for the 2nd Global Community Cleanup from September 18-26, 2021, and organized this campaign together with the Waste Heroes platform. For one week, dedicated employees of the Lufthansa Group worldwide cleared the parks and green spaces in their cities of all kinds of trash, like an old mattress, broken parts of a high-pressure cleaner and above all, countless masks and cigarette butts.
A special highlight was that some children and young people from the help alliance projects also took part in the community campaign. First and foremost, the children from the project “Preschool Education for Street Children” in the Arusha region in northeastern Tanzania. Instead of a normal school day, the children went out on this day to clean the surroundings of their school and education premises from garbage. Project coordinator Laura Single reported afterwards, “The kids had super fun with the preschool cleanup, and they’ve already asked teacher Regina if they can do the activity every week in a lesson now.”

The children and young people were also active in our aid projects in India. In the project “Return to Life for (Un)luckyCchildren”, around 30 students from four schools joined forces to set off equipped with trash bags and grabs. But they not only successfully collected trash, they also used the campaign to drain rain puddles and thus remove the breeding grounds for malaria and dengue mosquitoes.
The project coordinators of “School Education and a Happy Childhood for Slum Children” and “Education Creates Opportunities for Street Children” in India proudly reported that the children and young people in their projects also showed great commitment and cleaned up the nearby parks and streets. Through this campaign, they would like to act more environmentally conscious in the future and treat our planet with more care.
Devender, the founder and local person in charge of the project “A Better Future for Sporty Children” in Gurugram, India, told enthusiastically: “At first, the children were a bit surprised about this campaign. Then they had a lot of fun and among the younger ones it became a competition who could find more pieces of garbage. The teenagers were shocked that there is so much trash and that no one is aware of it. We see it every day but ignore it and live with it. Thank you so much for raising awareness. The villagers who watched us also honored and appreciated our activism. It was a great experience.”
